The foot (pl. feet), standard symbol: ft, is a unit of length in the human systems of measurement. The prime symbol, , is a customarily used alternative symbol.

The foot is supposedly that of the ‘average’ male foot, in common practice it is measured as 12 thumbs, or approximately 3 hands long. Like most forms of measurement used by humans in Northwest Lythia (including Hârn) are imprecise at best, and many rely on the proportions of the human anatomy, which change with every individual. The Mangai and its member guilds have in recent years begun work to bring more uniformity and a standard of measures for commerce, though they have worked out some the standards of measures for weight. In other areas, they so far have had limited success.

History[edit | edit source]

The Sindarin and Khuzdul have developed over many thousands of years, their own set of measurements and have a more precise and unified system of measures which works across measures of linear distance, volume and weight. While the early Jarin on Hârn lived under the Sindarian, the elder people’s standards have not passed into human use. Since many units of measure in common use by humans are derived from, and used in agriculture, it has never really necessitated unifying or reconciling them with the more elegant and precise units of measure worked out and used by the elder races.
