Special Note: The following description is written for use with the Harnmaster rules. 1st edition rules are marked ‘HM1’, while the 2nd edition rules from Harnmaster Religion are marked ‘HMR’. For those of you without these rules, a guide to terminology is provided. Translation rules for RuneQuest (3rd ed.) are also available.
Circles & Offices[edit | edit source]
The priesthood of Manaclir is divided into five Circles, based on Ritual ML. It is unique among tribal religions in having an overall religious leader at an inter-tribe level. Use the following table:
HMR | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Circle | ML | Office | RML | Office |
1st | 26+ | apprentice | 1+ | adult |
2nd | 41+ | 21+ | apprentice | |
3rd | 61+ | olna | 51+ | olna |
4th | 76+ | 71+ | ||
5th | 86+ | holna | 86+ | holna |
Apprentice Status[edit | edit source]
Anyone who wishes to become an Olna must be first be adopted as the 'son' of the existing Olna, who may have a number of apprentices at any given time. A substantial minority of apprentices are literally the sons of the Olna, although not all sons have to become apprentices. If an Olna dies without heir, then his successor is selected by lot from among the adult men of the tribe; this is regarded as a terrible calamity.
HM1
The apprentice gains the following skills:
Ritual/2, Survival/2, Oratory/3, Weatherlore/1, Embalming/1, Seamanship/1, Fishing/1
For Shu Adaenum, the last two skills are replaced by Agriculture/1, Herblore/1
The apprentice then gains three option points to be expended to improve his skills or open appropriate electtive skills. For each year spent as an apprentice, the character may improve his Ritual skill by half his SB.
Olna status[edit | edit source]
There is only one Olna in a given tribe, who acts as both the shaman and chieftain for his people. The Olna will normally nominate one of his apprentices to succeed him; if this heir also dies, then usually the oldest willing apprentice will take his place. Apprentices may remain as such all their lives, but cannot rise above the second circle. If a new Olna lacks the Ritual ML to reach third circle, then they still gain the rank if no better candidate is available, but do not gain any of the advantages of third circle status until their ML is high enough.
Holna Status[edit | edit source]
There can only be one Holna at any given time, and he resides at the 'wierding place' of Ahond on the otherwise deserted island of Enlaya. Each Holna nominates their successor from the most gifted apprentices of the Olnae. That person is then apprenticed to the Holna, and may advance beyond the second circle. Ideally, they should have a Ritual ML of 86+ by the time the Holna dies, but this does not always occur.
